May Updates From the AHS Counseling Office

We could not have asked for a better way to kick off the month of May than the day we had yesterday! We hope everyone was able to get outside and enjoy the sunshine.  Being outdoors, even for a little bit, helps mental health T. Fresh air, a bit of exercise, blue skies - all help you improve mood and feel more relaxed.  It's so important to be proactive in taking care of mental health, and weather like yesterday definitely helps!

Here are the updates from the AHS Counseling Office... as always, we hope this is helpful!

πŸŽ• SENIORS: Now that we are past May 1st and you have deposited at your chosen college, it is time to go into your Naviance account (if you have not done so already) and update all of the information in your "Colleges I'm Applying To" list to update us on all of the results.  Please report acceptances, rejections, deferrals, waitlisted, etc. so that we have accurate information.

πŸŽ• We have some great X-block options for students coming up.  The schedule is below.  I did want to point out that we have a few really interesting options!  On Wednesday, May 4th someone from the MetroWest YMCA will be coming in to speak with any kids looking to work for the YMCA this summer.  You can get a job during X-Block!  Another one we are excited about is Thursday, May 5th, a career exploration into the Trades.  We know that lots of students are interested in starting their careers right away by going into the trades, and this X-block is where you can learn how best to do it.  On Wednesday, May 18th we have a career exploration for anyone interested in pursuing Business.  The Dean of the Business Management department at a local college will be visiting to talk to students about how best to pursue a degree majoring in Business, and all of the options available.

Tuesday, May 3rd - Rhode Island College

Wednesday, May 4th - MetroWest YMCA (get a job for this summer!)

Thursday, May 5th - Career Exploration: Get information about careers in the Trades (construction, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, etc.)

Wednesday, May 18th: Career Exploration: Business

Thursday, May 19th: Career Exploration: Social Work

Monday, May 24th: Career Exploration: US Navy

πŸŽ•  If you are a senior going to college and needs financial aid, but who has NOT completed or sent your FAFSA form, UAspire is running a webinar and Q&A about how to complete the FAFSA. They are doing it in conjunction with MassBay but you definitely do not need to be attending MassBay to participate.  Take a look: https://uaspire.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_MBi-TPnyQHGOCPrfI_jCJg

πŸŽ•  SENIORS June 1st is the final due date for Koplik applications for those who are eligible to apply.  The Koplik scholarship can be applied to any in-state public college in Massachusetts (if you were already selected as an Adams scholar, you can still apply but you won't get any additional money; you should submit your Adams letter to your college as that scholarship is the same money but with fewer restrictions). For more information on applying for the Koplik scholarship, go to: https://www.ashland.k12.ma.us/Page/2679

πŸŽ•The NCAA recently published a very helpful two-page flyer about what you need academically to play Division I sports.  Very helpful!  There is also a link to info about Division II sports.  For Division III, you do not need to qualify with the NCAA, you just need to be accepted into the college.  Take a look!
