February Updates From the AHS Counseling Department

Happy February everyone... one last month of winter!  Bundle up, sip some hot chocolate, and look forward to springtime.  Here are some updates from the AHS Counseling office.  As always, we hope you find this helpful!

❆  Let's celebrate!  February 6th-10th is National School Counseling Week (#NSCW23). Counselors work tirelessly to help students, parents, faculty, staff, and administrators in a variety of ways, and some of the best and most important work we do is confidential.  Make sure you take a moment to thank your favorite AHS counselor, send some positivity their way, and maybe give Huxley a few extra belly rubs when you see him in the cafeteria.  It's his special week too!

❆ Data has been released from the 2021 MetroWest Adolescent Health Survey and it is important for both students and parents to know the data to best support students! Here are some really good infographics of some of the data from the report:

❆ Attention Juniors: College Knowledge Night For Juniors and Families will be held on Thursday, February 9th from 7:00pm-8:00pm.  This will be a virtual presentation, recommended for any student who is thinking about attending college.  We will send out the Zoom link to everyone just before the event.

❆ Next week the counselors will be going into Wellness classes to teach the Signs of Suicide program to the Sophomores.  A curriculum from Mindwise, this is an incredibly important topic that helps students identify potential warning signs and gives them the tools to be able to act in a positive way to get the help they or a friend need.  For more information on this excellent program visit: https://www.mindwise.org/sos-signs-of-suicide/

❄  Seniors now that term two grades are finalized (released Friday) we will automatically be sending updated transcripts for all of the colleges you filled out a Transcript Request Form for.  No need to ask us to do it - we're on it!

❆  Seniors we are entering prime-time scholarship season!  If you are requesting a transcript or letters of recommendation to be sent to a scholarship, here is the form you should use: https://forms.gle/Yvrv9ihsLS7C9Sjh6

How do you find scholarships you ask?  Here's how:

❆ Mark your calendars... on Saturday, March 18th beginning at 9:00am there is a College and Career Fair right here at AHS!  A great (and super easy) way to do college and career research.  For more detailed information go to: https://sites.google.com/site/mwcollegefair/

❆ The National College Fairs are returning to the area.  These are college fairs with schools from all over the country.  The fairs are coming to Providence on March 14th for those who want an early opportunity to go, but they are also coming to Boston on May 2nd, and 3rd.  For more info (and to register) go to: https://www.nacacfairs.org/

❆  A reminder that the deadline to register for the March SAT is February 10th.  Register here for any of the SAT dates: https://satsuite.collegeboard.org/sat/registration/dates-deadlines

❆  Looking for opportunities to take advantage of outside of school?  Check out our Opportunities! page where we update it regularly with options that are sent to us: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1TXAqqEItazPi2s5TdZByiYbzb4oe7Qb1nwvIrk4ZZy4/edit?usp=sharing

❆ We've moved our Job Board bulletin board to just outside the Nurse's office (right next to the "Opportunities" board).  Looking to get a part-time job?  Come visit to see these offerings.  (Keep in mind, though, that some of the best part-time jobs won't proactively notify us that they have openings... you have to go to them and apply!)
